Schools of Choice
Michigan's Schools of Choice program allows students to enroll in participating school districts outside their residence area. Each district chooses whether to participate annually. Haslett Public Schools has proudly participated in Schools of Choice since the program began, demonstrating our commitment to serving families beyond our district boundaries.
The schools of choice application period for the 2025-26 school year opens on May 1, 2025 and closes on May 31, 2025.

Eligibility and Boundaries
Students residing in school districts within Ingham County and its contiguous ISDs are eligible for Schools of Choice at Haslett Public Schools. Students must be able to attend school regularly and on time. Transportation is the responsibility of parents/guardians. See FAQ for special education eligibility outside Ingham ISD.
Available Openings
- Haslett Public Schools offers a limited number of Schools of Choice seats in each grade level
- The number of available seats varies annually based on classroom capacity
- The Board of Education determines specific openings by grade level each April
- Available slots will be published following the Board's decision
Building Placement
- Parents may indicate elementary building preferences on their application
- While we strive to honor building preferences and keep families together at the same elementary school, final building placement decisions are based on available space
Application Process
To apply for Schools of Choice at Haslett Public Schools, families must submit an application including the student’s:
- Name and grade level
- Home address
- Current district of residence
- Disclosure of suspension or expulsion history
Selection Guidelines
- If applications are fewer than available seats, all eligible students will be accepted
- If applications exceed available seats, state law requires a random lottery selection
- Priority is given to siblings of current Schools of Choice students
- Students not selected through the lottery will be placed on a waiting list
- Students with suspension (within two years) or expulsion may be ineligible per state law
Continuation of Enrollment
- Once enrolled, students may continue at Haslett without reapplying
- If a student withdraws and enrolls in another district, they forfeit their spot and must reapply during the next application period
- Siblings are not guaranteed enrollment but receive preference for available slots
Timeline
- April: Board determines participation and available openings
- May 1-31: Application period
- June: Lottery conducted if needed; families notified of acceptance
- June 25: Deadline for registration if accepted
