Ms. Julie Price

Hello Students and Parents,

I came to Haslett High School in 1995 to teach photography, journalism and yearbook after a 15 year career as a writer and editor for weekly and daily newspapers in Michigan and California. I now teach photojournalism, journalism, newspaper production, yearbook and English 11.

I am passionate about First Amendment rights and the importance of students having an authentic voice. The students in Haslett have not disappointed me with the talents they have brought to creation of the Viking Longboat student newspaper and Dixit yearbook. The Longboat is published eight to 12 times during the school year and is extremely popular with readers. And the Dixit has grown into a professional level publication. Through the years, students have won countless awards for their work through the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association and at the National Scholastic Press Association. The publications students work endless hours during and after school and are dedicated to producing sound journalism. Their pay? Pizza!

The photography class has evolved from a black and white darkroom environment to entirely digital. No longer do we slop around in chemcials, instead we use state-of-the-art digital darkroom software to work with images. Many of the students who take the class go on to participate on the newspaper or yearbook.

English 11 gives me the opportunity to share my intense love of books and words with students. I am an avid reader of fiction, poetry, memoirs, literary journalism and long-form journalism.

And finally, I am a wife, mother of two grown children and a proud, doting grandmother. Other hobbies include dinghy sailboat racing and as much time spent at a beach as possible (usually with a good book).
