During the 2020-21 school year, the Haslett Board of Education, Haslett's Voice for Change, Haslett Administrators, and staff have been wroking with Dr. Terry Flennaugh, Associate Professor of Urban Education Initiatives at Michigan State University, to develop a District Equity Plan. This plan is to be implemented during the 2021-22 school year.
Dr. Flennaugh met with district groups throughout the 2020-21 school year to familiarize staff with the components of social justice and bias-free culture. This spring (March 5 - March 19, 2021), the district distributed a survey to parents, students, staff, alumni, and other community members. The purpose of the survey was to gather feedback regarding district equity applicable to students and staff. The district also requested repondents to indicate their interest in assisting the district to develop an equity plan. Over 1100 individuals participated in the survey and over 100 resondents said they would be interested in serving on the Equity Planning Committee.
Along with Dr. Flennaugh, the district is in the process of disaggregating and quantifying survey data to be used by the district and the Equity Planning Committee in the development of an Equity Plan. Currently, the district is reviewing applicants and identifying members to serve on the Equity Planning Committee. It is our goal to have a team assembled in early May. Committee members will be notified of their selection.
We will continue to keep you up to date on the progress of this important work. Thanks for your support of our efforts to promote the practice of fair and just relationships within Halsett Public Schools and help the district to build a community free of bias and favoritism.
